Throughout my career I've often lamented how the small talk in the five minutes before a meeting starts seems to almost always be filled with personal beauty conversations or self deprecating food disclosures. The kind where one person inevitably says, “I’ve been SO good… then I’ve been SO bad,” all in reference to binging or sometimes just eating a bowl of pasta or some bread. One is not harmful, just boring. The other is harmful, and also boring. I'm not saying this to be cruel or judgmental. I'm attempting to be honest because I have a true desire to spark each other in those few unstructured moments in our day.
One thing that drew me to fashion was the wonder. Fashion is creating straight from imagination. Seeing beyond the physical and dreaming up newness. To me it's the almost childlike freedom to explore and build new things in clothes. And I'm missing that now. Let's be honest, I've been missing it always! Corporate fashion is not self expression. But I'm seeing a window here. In these small unstructured moments, that's where imagination can live.

We play into those stereotypes and hold lengthy conversations about nail care. But I believe our bond could be so much deeper, if we weren't too afraid to go there.
It’s not that I want to talk about politics or the weather. It’s that if we’re going to discuss things with so little influence on each other’s day-to-day lives, I’d like it to be super cool stuff like new science discoveries, or what we think wormholes are, or something else stimulating ideas.
Or at least mix it in sometimes.
I know it sounds a little comical, but this is a real desire I have: to make those five-minute pre-meeting chatter, before the last person arrives, more interesting. Maybe even make them the highlight. I wonder if people would try to be on time more often?
So, as an official fashion blogger, I beseech you, go out, find a wild science fact (preferably something recently discovered), and bring that to your next fashion meeting. You will be the talk of the office. You might even become the one people look to lead the small talk going forward
. And who knows, maybe a little imagination will sneak into everybody's day.
